Document Setup

After selecting your trim size, you need to set your document layout preferences.

From the main menu in Microsoft Word, select Format – Document

On the “Layout” tab, select the following options:

  1. Section Start – Odd Page – Chapters typically begin on an odd-numbered page (Recto) so that they are on the right-hand side when a book is open.
  2. Headers & Footers – Check the options for Different Odd & Even and Different First Page
  3. Set “from edge” to .4 for header and footer
  4. Page – Vertical Alignment should be set to Top
  5. Make sure Apply To is set to Whole Document
  6. Click “OK”

Next, toggle to the “Margins” tab and select the following options:

Margins (recommended – your gutter margins may change depending on the page count)

  1. Top – 1.0
  2. Bottom – .6
  3. Left – .6
  4. Right – .6
  5. Gutter – .1

Pages

Next to multiple pages, always select “Mirror Margins” for books.

Click “OK”

Gutter Margins

  • Image 1 shows the book with no gutter margins.
  • Image 2 shows the book with the gutter margins set at .2 inches.
  • Because books have bindings in the center that hold all the pages together, extra page spacing called “gutter” margins” is required on the inside of the pages.
  • Even pages will have larger margins on the right side.
  • Odd-numbered pages will have larger margins on the left side.
