File Specifications
The interior formatting requirements for a hardcover book are the same as a paperback book. However, the minimum page count is 75 and the maximum page count is 550.
As long as the trim size of your paperback book is available for hardcover, you can use the same interior file (with a separate ISBN) for the paperback and hardcover editions.
- For best results, convert your paperback manuscript to a PDF before uploading it to KDP.
- Embed all fonts and images in your file before submitting.
- Flatten objects and layers before submitting.
- Do not have crop marks, trim marks, bookmarks, annotations, placeholder text, or metadata in your file.
- All images should be at least 300 DPI.
- No more than 2 consecutive blank pages are permitted in your book.

- Minimum page count is 75
- Maximum page count is 550
Interior Specifications
Page Spreads – must be single page.
Page Size
No bleed – Set the page to your selected trim size.
Interior Full bleed
- If you want your images to bleed to the edges of your pages, extend them 0.125″ (3 mm) beyond the final trim size from the top, bottom, and outer edges of your manuscript.
- Format your PDF manuscript at 0.25″ (6 mm) higher and 0.125″ (3 mm) wider than your selected trim size in order to print the full bleed area.
Font
- The minimum font size is 7 points.
- All fonts should be embedded before publishing.
Image Resolution
300 DPI or higher
Pagination
- All page numbers should be ordered sequentially, with even numbers on left pages and odd numbers on right pages.
- Use Roman numerals to indicate the beginning of the manuscript, and then continue with standard page numbering.
Grayscale fill
For black and white ink on white or cream paper, a minimum grayscale fill of 10% is recommended.
Line Width
Lines used in charts, tables, graphic elements, etc. should have a minimum thickness of 0.75 (0.3mm).
Page turn direction
KDP only supports books formatted to read from left to right (LTR).
